Overview

In spring 2021, a UTC subcommittee conducted a detailed survey examining the lifecycle of underground fiber networks across North America. With input from 28 companies representing 268 utilities—approximately 25% of those surveyed—the report provides a structured analysis aligned with previous UTC publications on ADSS and OPGW systems. It covers critical areas including infrastructure assessment, transmission requirements, cable structure, network deployments, fiber types and enclosures, deployment trends, best practices, challenges, and failure mitigation. These findings offer utilities a comprehensive reference for understanding and managing underground fiber systems over their operational lifespan.

The report highlights key lifecycle stages and common issues utilities encounter, offering insight into evolving best practices and deployment strategies. By maintaining consistent organizational standards and incorporating real-world data, the report supports utilities in enhancing network reliability, scalability, and resilience. It also provides a foundational resource for future planning and investment in underground fiber infrastructure, particularly as utilities continue to modernize communications networks to support grid reliability and operational efficiency.
