Overview

During spring 2021, the UTC fiber subcommittee devised a comprehensive survey focusing on the lifecycle of underground fiber networks. This survey reached out to UTC members representing 268 utilities across North America, with responses coming from 28 distinct companies, accounting for approximately 25% of the utilities surveyed. This report maintains the organizational structure employed in previous UTC publications, encompassing the lifecycles of ADSS and OPGW systems.

The report is partitioned into nine sections, covering the following topics: assessment of underground fiber infrastructure; fiber optic transmission requirements; cable structure; network deployments; fiber types, vaults, and splice cases; trends impacting deployment; fiber utilization and best practices; addressing specific challenges; and failures and mitigation.
